On a Veteran’s Day
the november rain chills me
I smile and wave as you pass
and tell my kids to wave too
I tell them of your sacrifice, your bravery
on far away fields of war
we pause, hand on heart
standing in complete freedom
yet taking that freedom for granted
cold drops are blown into my face
and I think of the discomfort you endured
the loneliness, the pain, the sorrow
I think my smile and waving hand
is little thanks for what you’ve done
so I bend near their ears
and whisper more stories of you
I will not let them forget
I will help them understand
this is my greater thanks
